9/14/98 President’s Executive Order

Each agency shall initiate a program to promote cost-effective waste prevention and recycling of reusable materials in all of its facilities.

7/21/99 Governor’s Executive Order

Each agency shall be responsible for implementing programs to make its operations environmentally sustainable, including programs to reduce and recycle solid wastes and procure environmentally preferable goods and services.

Benefits of Recycling:

  Decreases the amount of material sent to a landfill.

  Saves energy, water, and natural resources.

 Generates revenue and creates jobs. Recycling employs approx. 14,000 people across the state. It employs more people than the bio-tech and agricultural livestock industries in NC. 

 Creates less pollution than other waste management options (landfills and waste to energy facilities)

Examples of Waste Reduction and Reuse:

Avoid over packaged and disposable products.

Make double-sided copies.

Share newspaper or magazine subscriptions.

Reuse ceramic mugs instead of disposable cups.

Shop at a thrift store, consignment shop, or yard sale.

Rent or borrow books and tools.
