People start most wildfires

by controlled burning or arson.

Pasquotank and Camden counties have soil containing high amounts of organic materials which during periods of dry weather can increase the potential for uncontrollable wildfires. These fires may also be started by lightning during severe thunderstorms.

In some cases, these fires create hazardous conditions where visibility on roadways, due to unforeseen changes in the weather, is seriously impaired. Under these conditions drivers need to be cautious and take actions to protect themselves and their passengers if they encounter smoke, or fog.

If you encounter smoke on the highway you should:

SLOW DOWN!

  • Turn on your low-beam headlights
  • Use windshield wipers in heavy fog
  • If the fog or smoke becomes so thick that you cannot see well enough to safely continue driving, pull completely off the roadway (allowing sufficient space between the vehicle and roadway so you can safely exit the vehicle without obstructing traffic) and stop. Turn on your emergency flashers.
  • Report the hazardous conditions to 911 or NC Highway Patrol.
