Did you know that if you get lost, or if you see a fire, or if you need help for someone who is hurt or very sick, you don’t have to worry! There is a number you can call and someone will be there to help you. First you dial a 9, then you dial a 1, and then you dial 1 again. If you are away from your home, you can call 9-1-1 from any pay phone and you don’t even need any money!

There are 5 reasons to call 9-1-1

  1. If you see a fire or smell smoke
  2. If you see someone hurting someone else or stealing something
  3. If you need help for someone who is very sick or hurt
  4. If you are lost and can’t find your way home
  5. If you need EMERGENCY help fast for any reason

REMEMBER! Don’t call 9-1-1 to ask questions or play a joke. This number is for emergencies ONLY!

How to make a 9-1-1 call

TRY not to get excited. Stay calm and take a deep breath.

Dial 9, then 1, then another 1.

An adult will answer the phone. Speak to that person in a loud and clear voice, so that they can understand you.

Tell the person that answers the phone, your name, the phone number you are calling from, your address and the location of the emergency, and tell them exactly what is wrong.

The person you are talking to will ask you questions, so don’t hang up the phone until they tell you to.

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT AN EMERGENCY IS OR IF YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER, ASK YOUR MOM OR DAD OR ANOTHER ADULT.
