Register of Deeds


Recording Documents



All documents EXCEPT DEEDS AND DEEDS OF TRUST to be recorded are $26.00 for the first 15 pages and $4.00 for each additional page. Deeds of Trusts are $56.00 for the first 15 pages and $4.00 for each additional page.

Certain deeds are subject to an NC Excise Tax and a county Land Transfer Tax. Please call during normal business hours for more information. Cancellations of Deeds of Trust are no charge.

Certified Birth Certificates

Provide child's full name, date of birth, father's full name, mother's full maiden name and your relationship to the child. Fee is $10.00 for the large size certificate with a raised seal. (Wallet size is no longer available.)

Certified Death Certificates

Provide decedent's full name, date of death and your relationship to the decedent. Fee is $10 per copy.

Certified Marriage License

Provide applicants' full names, date of marriage, and your relationship to the parties. Fee is $10.00 per copy.


Marriage License


The premarital physical is no longer required. Both applicants must present picture identification. Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must have written parental consent and certified copies of their birth certificate in order to acquire a license. Please contact the Register of Deeds office at 252-335-4367 for further information.

Both applicants must provide their Social Security numbers and verification of the number. Applicants may present a Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with the number as verification. Also a certified birth certificate for both the applicants are now required if under the age of 21. Note: An alien admitted to the United States for permanent residence or to engage in employment must be issued a Social Security number.

Applicants who are not eligible for a Social Security number may obtain a marriage license by presenting a notarized affidavit that states "I have not been issued a social security number by the US government and I am not eligible to obtain one." The affidavit is available in the Register of Deeds office. Divorced applicants must provide the month and year of their last divorce. There is no waiting period between the divorce and applying for the new license. The license is good immediately upon issuance and is valid for 60 days.

The fee for the license is $60.00. Only cash is accepted as payment.

Marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding Holidays. Applicants should be in our office prior to 4:30 p.m. if possible. If you plan to be married by the magistrate after obtaining a license, please call 252-331-4758 for information regarding the office hours and other information regarding the ceremony and fees.

If you need a copy of your marriage license, you may acquire it at our office in person or you may request it by mail at P. O. Box 154, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0154. Please be sure to sign your request.
