Precinct Officials
Appointments
Precinct officials (poll workers) are recommended by the county political parties and are appointed by the Board of Elections in August of odd-numbered years to serve a 2 year term.
Qualifications
A precinct official must:
- Be a registered voter and resident of the county in which the precinct is located,
- Be of good repute,
- Be able to read and write.
A precinct official must not:
- Be an elected official in any federal, state or local government
- Be a candidate for nomination or election
- Hold any office in a political party or political organization
- Be a manager or treasurer for any candidate or political party
A precinct official may not serve in an election if a parent, spouse, child or sibling has filed for elective office. No blood relative of first cousin or nearer, or a parent in-law, child in-law or sibling in-law may serve together at the same precinct.
Training
Pursuant to G.S. 163-46, all precinct officials shall attend instructional training before each primary, general and municipal election. Training sessions are held in the Board of Election office at 426 McArthur Drive. Precinct officials are compensated for attending training.
Election Day
Precinct officials must arrive at their assigned polling place no later than 6:00 a.m. on Election Day. After arriving at the polling place, precinct officials must remain until the polls close and the last voter has voted, all supplies are packed, all signs are removed and the polling location restored to original order.
Precinct officials are not allowed to wear campaign buttons, political jewelry or clothing at the polling place. Discussion of politics or candidates is not permitted while working at the polls.
Smoking is not permitted in the voting enclosure or on the grounds of any polling places.
Precinct officials are compensated for working the polls.
